'Now Hear This!' is the true story of "Scotty," an enlisted sailor who is eager to go to sea and fight, but finds himself assigned to an ancient WWI vessel, one of the Navy's oldest destroyers, captained by one of the Navy's youngest skippers.
But the old four-stacker still has plenty of fight, as does her crew when they take on the German U-boats out in the North Atlantic. On the Halloween night of 1943 they engage in what historians call, "One of the greatest ship-to-ship death duels in the history of fighting at sea," followed by a grim and deadly struggle for survival.
Scotty's journey takes him from the Atlantic U-boat War, to hometown hero to the Marine stockade, where one Marine warns him, "You're gonna wish you were anyplace else but here." While Scotty does find the Leathernecks to be brutal he attributes their inhospitable manners to their disappointment of being stuck on the mainland instead of out on the Pacific Islands fighting the Japanese.
And the Pacific Island War is exactly where he finds himself next; but this time he is assigned to a brand spanking new command ship equipped with all the newest bells and whistles, including real toilets! "This should be great duty!" he thinks, before finding himself in the middle of the greatest sea battle history has ever known. There at the Battle of Leyte Gulf the dreaded Kamikaze attacks begin, and Scotty and his shipmates watch helplessly as suicide planes drop from the sky and crash into American ships. Soon their own ship becomes a target.
Scotty's story takes us back to a time when Americans were united, patriotism was par, and civilians sacrificed deeply so that "the boys" would have what they needed to fight. His story is humorous and heart-breaking, politically incorrect and real, and it exhibits that great American fighting spirit and old-fashion sense of humor that got our fathers and grandfathers thru the Second World War.

It is a good read and kept my attention to the very end. It is a blend of personal and historical account, unfortunately neither is given an in-depth look. The historical account was the war in general, always the macro and not the micro. The personal account detailed the relationship with his wife but not much of the relationships he had with his comrades. It almost seemed like he had no friends in the Pacific tour. Even with the generalization I recommend this book.Product details

Now Hear This! A Sailor Story of WWII eBook M ALICE SCOTT Reviews
Spell bounding story, just couldn't put the book down, great author, will look for other by this writer. Recommend this book to those who enjoy World War II history.
This a very good read for fellow swab jockeys for an insight of a real sailor's life. For today's Navy it will give them some idea what it was like to be in a naval battle.
A good read about the greatest generation. What they faced then and how most dealt with it.
This is one of the best books that I have read. It is based on the lives of two people .
This book read like a good novel. My brother is retired Navy. I am thinking about purchasing for him. Enough detail about war/battles fought, but not too much.
So bad I could not finish. 2 stars for the 15% at the beginning that was actually the sailor's story. The rest was just rambling, amateurish WWII history about what was going on in the war in the same region as the sailor with nothing really to do with the sailor. This is mostly the author's story and not the sailor's. The book sunk.
a large amount of history along with romance, disappointment, happiness, and family. as good of a WWII book as I have read and I have read a lot of them.
this book brought back both happy and solemn memories of the years I was in the navy. for me it was like a journey, as a young sailer who stayed in so
Long that's his my hair was all gray I have been to,all of the places talked about in book, including San Antonio texas
